Wait, Worry, Wonder

It’s May of 2020 and I, along with the rest of the world, am waiting. Waiting for the threat of the Covid virus to pass. Waiting for businesses to reopen. Waiting for the fear to pass that keeps us anxious while we wait. Waiting for the day our children can just be children. Waiting to erase the word 'quarantine' from our daily vocabulary. Waiting for our country to stop arguing about who is at fault. Waiting to simply live the lives we took for granted.

Wait. But we are not content to just keep waiting. So we wait and worry. We worry about the virus. We worry about our businesses. We worry about our children. We worry about our arguing. We worry about the lives we took for granted. We worry about waiting.

Worry. But what if…we are in process of metamorphosis? Definition: a change of the form or nature of a thing or person into a completely different one. What if we knew we had to wait so something even more beautiful, beyond our comprehension, could emerge. If we KNEW that for sure then we wouldn’t worry. We’d be living in anticipation. But we don’t know that for sure. In fact, what we do know for sure is that we are changing but we don’t know into what? Will it be beautiful? Will it be disastrous? Do we have a choice? I think we always have a choice. We can bemoan our plight…our place in history…the insanity of the way so many people are treating each other or we can look inward while we wait and Wonder. We can be in wonder (noun)- a feeling of surprise mingled with admiration, caused by something beautiful, unexpected, unfamiliar, or inexplicable. AND….we can Wonder (verb) - desire or be curious to know something.

Wonder.

While we wait….let’s be curious to know something…to wonder who we are and who we want to be. In the work of the Enneagram growth we can take it a step at a time. With the surge in popularity, the Enneagram it can be overwhelming to know where to begin or even why to begin. We talk about that very question in this podcast (Why Learn the Enneagram). In this episode we focus on why it matters in regard to relationship and we talk about the song, "If You Don't Know Me By Now", that I used to sing without giving the words a thought and, in fact, I’m pretty sure I sang it almost as an anthem. How can someone else know us if we don't really know ourselves?

It all starts with a little self inquiry....one question at a time. Next week we'll talk about our Core Fears and ask 'why'.

But while we wait...let's consider wonder over worry.

We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections. If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others. — John Lennon.
